What happened to the Red Wave?

In a night that was expected to be a Red Wave with Republicans taking control of both houses of Congress, several Democrats have won big races and as final votes are tallied undecided races continue to lean left.

So, what happened to the Red Wave surge of GOP winners that so many were anticipating?

"The 2022 midterms appear to have been viewed as a choice between Biden and Trump, not a referendum on Democrats alone — and voters in many states seem to have made the same choice they did in 2020," Vox found.

In Pennsylvania, Lt. Gov. John Fetterman took down Republican Dr. Mehmet Oz; in New Hampshire, Democrat Maggie Hassan took down GOP challenger Donald Bolduc; and in Colorado, Michael Bennet beat out Republican Joe O’Dea.

Republicans have won two critical races, with Republican JD Vance taking out Democrat Tim Ryan in Ohio and Ted Budd beating Democrat Cheryl Beasley.

Four races are still up in the air: Arizona and Georgia, where Democrats currently have the lead, and Nevada and Wisconsin, where Republicans are currently winning.

While there has not been a call either way for control of the Senate, top GOP members are speaking out after a night that was supposed to go in their favor instead flipped.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) shared on an appearance with NBC that Tuesday night was “Definitely not a Republican wave, that is for darn sure.”

While it wasn’t the clear sweep he was expecting, Graham shared that he still has hope his party will take control of the Senate when all is said and done.

“I think we’re going to be at 51, 52 when it’s all said and done in the Senate,” the Senator said.

Rep. Mayra Flores (R-Texas) lost her seat on Tuesday night and quickly took to Twitter to share her frustrations.

“The RED WAVE did not happen,” she tweeted after her race was called. “Republicans and Independents stayed home. DO NOT COMPLAIN ABOUT THE RESULTS IF YOU DID NOT DO YOUR PART!”

Flores had won her seat in a special election in June and then promptly lost it to Democrat Vicente Gonzalez on Election Day.

Governor’s races across the country also showed Democrats winning out in contested battles, with Pennsylvania Democrat Josh Shapiro beating out Doug Mastriano and Massachusetts Democrat Maura Healey taking down Republican Geoff Diehl.

However, Republican favorites did win out as expected, with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis winning swiftly and decisively, as well as South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem and Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp.

While there are still many votes to be counted, close races are leaning left, leaving experts believing that the red wave was stopped by a blue wall.
