Thousands of theaters across the country are participating in National Cinema Day on Saturday, when popcorn will cost more than your movie ticket.

The promotion slashes prices to nearly a third of what they normally cost, as the average movie ticket in America costs approximately $9. The discount day was made possible by funding from the Cinema Foundation, a non-profit run by the National Association of Theater owners.

More than 3,000 movie theaters nationwide, from large chains like AMC and Regal to small, independently owned venues, are participating, including the Rialto Cinemas Cerrito in El Cerrito.

"We're excited about it because of a, the obvious, it gives people who may not have come in a long time, or sometimes can’t afford the ticket prices, an opportunity to check out everything." Josh, the manager of the theater, told KCBS Radio. "But for us, we’re doubly excited because we have something extra special. We’re doing a double feature, an old school real double feature."

The theater will be celebrating and honoring actress Olivia Newton John, who died early last month, with a showing of her iconic films "Grease" and "Xanadu" back-to-back all for the price of one $3 ticket.

Josh added that the theater is also using the promotion as a chance for residents to see their redesigned look.

"We hope to use this as an opportunity to show off the work that we did during COVID because we were busy," he explained. "We put in all new seats and carpet, and we really cleaned the place up."

The Cinema Foundation wants to make National Cinema Day an annual discount event.
