The National Park Service is making it a little easier, or at least cheaper, to get outdoors for the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday.

The Park Service is waiving the entrance fees to any National Parks that charge them in honor of the holiday.

“Locally, it means everyone will be able to visit Muir Woods National Monument, for free on Monday,” said Julian Espinoza with the National Park Service.

Espinoza added that things are, of course, a little different because of COVID-19, specifically when it comes to MLK Day.

“Ordinarily, this holiday is a day of service,” he told KCBS Radio. “A day for people to give back to their community that attracts thousands of volunteers to the National Park Service. Unfortunately, our volunteer programs remain suspended.”

However, there certainly is plenty to enjoy about Muir Woods, even without volunteer work.

“Visitors can walk among the old grove redwood trees,” he said.

The entrance fee to Yosemite National Park also will be waived.

The National Park Service waives these fees on six days every year, but if getting to a park on Monday isn't feasible, enthusiasts can find virtual tours and podcasts on the NPS website.
