There's been a movement in Congress to vote against President Joe Biden's massive infrastructure bill unless it restores a tax break that made a big difference in California.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi added her support to the movement on Thursday. In her weekly virtual news conference, Pelosi said she'd like to see the cap on state and local deductions, or SALT cap, restored.

"Hopefully we can get it into the bill," she said. "I never give up if something like that means so much to the American people."

It means a lot in states with higher taxes, especially California.

Pelosi said that cap was removed in what she called a strictly political action.

In their 2017 tax law, Republicans put a $10,000 limit on state and local deductions.

"For the Republican members of California to vote against our state, and by the way without any consultation with the finance director of the state as to what impact it would have on our meeting the needs of the people of California," she said.

However, Pelosi stopped short of supporting leaders in New York and New Jersey who said they won't vote for the infrastructure package unless the SALT cap is restored.

"I would withhold any comment about whether I'd vote for a bill or not until you see what the bill is," the San Francisco Congresswoman added.
