In this special series, KCBS Radio's Jim Taylor is spending two weeks traversing the country to talk to voters ahead of one of the most divisive elections of our time.

Reporting today not from Columbus, Ohio but just outside Columbus, Indiana, more specifically the town of Taylorsville, smack dab in the middle of America’s heartland and the birthplace of Vice President Mike Pence.

“Family members are still here,” said Father Clem Davis at St. Bartholomew’s Catholic Church. “His mother is still a parishioner. Two of his brothers are still parishioners here with their families… so yes I know the Pence family.”

When asked if residents feel a strong sense of hometown pride in seeing Pence grow from a boy into the Vice President, Father Davis said, “well, particularly the ones who agree with him politically do.”

Columbus has changed quite a bit from the halcyon days of Pence’s childhood when the town was 99% white; like much of America it has become much more diverse.

Tomorrow this road trip will cross into the central time zone and over to Illinois.
