Survey: More than 70% of Asian Americans in CA fear being victim of hate crime

A statewide survey shows fears about personal safety are widespread among members of California’s Asian American community, as reports of anti-Asian violence continue.

The recently released California Community Poll found that more than 70% of Asian Americans living in California are worried about becoming the victims of racially motivated violence, the highest percentage of any ethnic group surveyed.

Russell Jeung, who co-founded the hate crime tracking group Stop AAPI Hate, said that high figure reflects the psychological toll of the ongoing surge in anti-Asian violence.

“It’s been traumatizing,” he told KCBS Radio. “One out of five Stop AAPI Hate respondents who’ve experienced racism show signs of racial trauma – that’s elevated symptoms of depression, anxiety, hypervigilance and avoidance. So, it’s clear this is a traumatizing time for Asian Americans, a collective traumatizing time.”

Meantime, the report also found that a growing share of Californians agree that Asian Americans are discriminated against.

Jeung said that more awareness could lead to action.

“That’s the hope – that as we raise awareness we also educate people about the need for racial justice,” he added.
