SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – Congressman Adam Schiff posted a video earlier this morning, putting his name in the ring for a California Senate seat, taking aim at GOP lawmakers and former President Donald Trump.

"I wish I could say the threat of MAGA extremists is over. It is not," Schiff warned amid his announcement.

The Democratic Representative told KCBS Radio anchors Eric Thomas and Margie Shafer he believes the United States is in the midst of a struggle for our democracy.

"I think part of the reason why democracy has been so vulnerable is that our economy just hasn't been working for millions of Americans who are struggling to enjoy the same quality of life as their parents and see their children's future very much at risk," he said. "That's left them open to a demagogue who comes along and promises that he alone can fix it."

Schiff stated he wants to fight for Californians, for an economy that works for everyone and for our democracy, and believes the place to do it is in the Senate. "That's where some of Donald Trump's biggest enablers are — Ted Cruzes and Josh Hawleys and others who are tearing down our institution and I think who are eviscerating the middle class," he said.

In making his announcement, Schiff has launched a campaign for Sen. Dianne Feinstein's seat, despite the fact that Feinstein has not announced whether she plans to seek a sixth full term next year.

"I want to make sure that everything I do affords her the respect that she's earned," he explained. "She hasn't made a decision about her plans and I think that she's earned the right to make that decision when she's ready, but she certainly was comfortable with my announcement."
