Gov. Gavin Newsom’s proposal to send $600 stimulus checks to low-and middle-income Californians to bolster the state’s recovery was approved by lawmakers on Monday.

The second round of stimulus checks is a part of Newsom’s $262.6 billion state budget proposal introduced in May.

The budget passed included comprises on most of the major issues, and the governor and Legislature are still negotiating how to spend funds on wildfire prevention, drought and child care, according to reporting by the San Francisco Chronicle.

The second state stimulus package would send $600 checks to households making up to $75,000 per year that didn’t receive a check in the first round of stimulus payments in the spring. The first $3.7 billion round targeted those making $30,000 or less.

To qualify for the new round of checks, you need to have filed a 2020 tax return. Recipients need to have made $75,000 or less last year and have lived in California for more than half of the 2020 tax year. Recipients also need to be a California resident on the date payment is issued and not be eligible to be claimed as a dependent.
