Recent numbers show a rise in hate crimes and Cynthia Choi of the San Francisco-based Chinese for Affirmative Action said incidents of discrimination are also major problems.

"Majority are not hate crimes but their serious, insidious and our community continues to be afraid to leave their homes have changed their daily routines, and it's has been a traumatizing experience for all," Choi said.

One of the services that the grants will be funding is an escort service for seniors.

"You know that was one of the most popular things seniors really were afraid to go to the grocery store and afraid to walk to the bus and catch a bus to go somewhere," Assemblymember Phil Ting explained. "They were losing their freedom and so we wanted to make sure that they had people escorting them and really making sure that they could again take back their lives."

The escort service is just one of the services that will be supported through the $30 million grants along with mental health services, language support and an effort to address the root causes of hate.

"California's response is by far the most significant in terms of dollars, but also by the fact that majority of the funding is actually going to trusted community organizations," Choi added.
