The state has worked with the local county offices to ensure roughly 7.2 million students and staff members at public and private schools in each county get at-home COVID-19 tests, Governor Newsom said in a press release.
This is part of the governor's SMARTER plan to keep the state prepared and supplied to lower the spread of COVID-19, the release said.
"California is focused on keeping schools open and students safe, and we're not letting our guard down," Governor Newsom said in the release. "We know that COVID-19 is still present in our communities, but the SMARTER Plan is how we keep people safe and continue moving the state forward."
The state also provides personal protection equipment including masks, gloves, hand sanitizer and more. Since students returned from winter break the state has distributed 40.6 million KN95, N95 and surgical masks to schools, according to the release.
To help encourage kids to test before returning to school the California Department of Public Health has given schools fliers and social media images to highlight the testing program.
