But for Californians, the highlight was comedian Stephen Colbert acknowledging the circus of the state's recent gubernatorial recall election.

Colbert began by saying he was supposed to be presenting the award for best supporting actress in a drama series, but first, he had the results for special recall election for the 2018 award for best comedy.

He held his envelope aloft, amidst snickers from the audience.

The winner from that year was Amazon’s Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, elected in "an overwhelming majority," he said.

But, because California allows the recall of "any Emmy award" the winner could soon be, "the Marvelous Mrs. Larry Elder," said Colbert.

Luckily, Mrs. Maisel survived the recall, and it "only cost California $275 million dollars," Colbert added.

The recall election last week ended with a landslide victory for Gov. Gavin Newsom. The top contender to replace him, conservative talk show host Larry Elder, had planned to repeal vital COVID-19 safety policies statewide that would have impacted schools and healthcare workers.

Newsom pulled ahead in his campaign over the summer with major appearances and advertisements from top Democrats, including former President Barack Obama and current Vice President Kamala Harris.

Winning in such a momentous victory has had many wondering if the entire recall effort was worth it, and how it could impact the election next year.
