Public health officials across California are now focusing on tackling vaccine hesitancy as figures show that the demand for shots is declining -- even with a large proportion of people still not inoculated.

Blue Shield is helping with the vaccination rollout and CEO Paul Markovich says hesitancy remains a major concern and will need more outreach.

He also defended his company's role in distribution of the vaccine and says the much criticized state MyTurn website has been improved.

LA County has seen a big drop in demand for vaccinations. Could incentives convince more people to get shots?

Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer isn't opposed to the idea, but says she wants to focus on other strategies for now.

"It's making sure they have information and get vaccinated."

That includes extending the no-appointment needed policy at the county-run vaccination sites.

Some places are trying incentives to get more shots in arms. West Virginia is offering a $100 savings bond to residents between the ages of 16 and 35 who get vaccinated. Detroit will be providing a $50 pre-paid debit card to anyone who brings in a local for a shot.

Earlier in the pandemic, LA County gave out $20 gift cards to encourage people to complete contract-tracing interviews.
