State lawmakers vote to extend eviction protections for tenants who are struggling to make rent payments due to the pandemic.
The emergency legislation would keep tenants from getting kicked out, as long as they pay at least a quarter of their rent.
Like others, Assemblyman Chris Holden does not think this bill is perfect.
But the Pasadena Democrat says it provides critical protections and support to keep "thousands of families afloat" while lawmakers work out ways to get California "through this crisis."
"Tenants are really walking a tightrope but it is also, in many cases, the landlords who are also in the same position. So this legislation helps create relief for both," he says.
The bill also creates a program that will use up to $2.6 billion in federal funding to help landlords recover 80% of low-income tenants' back rent from April 2020 to March 2021, if they forgive the rest of the debt and agree not to pursue an eviction.
Governor Gavin Newsom, who helped to work out the deal, is expected to approve it.
