It’s now illegal to film people outside of abortion clinics in California.

Gov. Gavin Newsom recently signed a pair of laws aimed at protecting the privacy of abortion providers and their patients, one of which makes it illegal to film people within 100 feet of an abortion clinic, if the purpose is intimidation.

“It’s already like a walk of shame as it is, I can’t imagine somebody taping me at one of the worst times of my life,” said a Hayward woman, Christy.

Offenders are punishable with up to a year in jail, $10,000 fine, or both.

The second law, authored by San Francisco Assemblymember David Chiu, makes it easier for young people still using their parents' health insurance to keep their medical information secret, including abortions.

Opponents argue that parents or guardians deserve to be notified if their child is a minor seeking an abortion.

“We’ve got to continue to step up our efforts to do, dare I say, just the opposite of these states, like Texas,” said Newsom.

Texas recently controversially banned abortions after six weeks, a decision that is being contested by the Justice Department.
