CAL FIRE wants the public to be ready for what could be another dangerous and record-breaking fire season in California.
It’s Wildfire Preparedness Week.
2020 was a devastating year for wildfires in California. Six of the largest and most destructive wildfires occurred in state history, with more than 4 million acres burned.
CAL FIRE Chief Thom Porter told KCBS Radio with continued dry conditions and temperatures above normal for this time of year, 2021 could be as catastrophic as last year. "What is my concern is that we have conditions that will cause large and damaging fires again," he said. "Then it depends on what Mother Nature gives us."
So far this year, CAL FIRE has responded to more than 1,300 wildfires.
The agency is hiring 1,400 additional firefighters, adding 30 new fire crews, replacing five helicopters and enhancing technology.
California State Office of Emergency Services Director Mark Ghilarducci added that most importantly, they need the public’s help with preparing their homes and having a wildfire evacuation plan in place.
