SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – California will soon become the first state in the nation to outlaw a common grocery store item in hopes of benefiting the environment.

Under a bill signed into law by Gov. Gavin Newsom last week, the days are numbered for plastic produce bags.
The large rolls of plastic bags that sit in fruit and vegetables sections will soon be replaced by a more sustainable option across — green compostable bags already seen in many stores.
"If it's good for the environment, we should do it," a Safeway shopper told KCBS Radio. She said she's already moved away from plastic bags. "I use, most of the time, reusable bags."
Californians already approved a state-wide ban on single-use plastic bags at grocery store check-out lines, but due to a loophole in the law, produce bags are still allowed because they're classified as "reusable."
The produce plastic bag ban will go into effect in 2025 to give stores time to change their supply chain.
