California Republicans voted on Saturday to not make an endorsement in the September recall election of Gov. Gavin Newsom.
The CAGOP has been vying hard for the recall election, but decided against an endorsement because some party leaders are worried that putting all the support behind one candidate will disinterest some voters.
The main goal is to gather as many votes as possible. If more than 50% of voters vote "no" when asked if they would like to recall the governor, then Newsom will stay in office.
Four candidates had qualified for the nixed endorsement including radio talk show host Larry Elder, former San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, Assemblyman Kevin Kiley and former US Representative Doug Ose.
Republican candidates have depicted Newsom as an incompetent governor whose leadership inflicted unnecessary financial pain during the pandemic, while Democrats have sought to frame the recall as driven by far-right extremists and supporters of former President Donald Trump.
