EUREKA, Calif. (AP) — Two Northern California police officers are on paid leave after a news outlet reported they are accused of sending degrading text messages about women and the homeless.

Eureka Police Chief Steve Watson said Wednesday that Sgt. Rodrigo Reyna-Sanchez and officer Mark Meftah were put on leave while an outside investigator conducts a review.

The announcement came hours after The Sacramento Bee reported about the texts allegedly circulated among six officers in a squad led by Reyna-Sanchez.

The newspaper's report said the officers bantered about beating down protesters and made degrading remarks about women and their bodies.
