SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – State officials have issued an advisory for parents to keep their recreational pot safely stored away from children.

The advisory follows a dramatic increase in the number of young children accidentally exposed to cannabis, most commonly through edible gummies.

Cannabis gummies can look, feel and taste like candy, leading to kids ingesting them thinking they're just indulging in a sweet treat.

"Their parents have it at home and they're not going to accidentally buy it," said Carla Lowe, the founder of Citizens Against Legalizing Marijuana.

She said high levels of THC in gummies can cause great harm to children, calling the drugs "hallucinogens."

In Santa Rosa, the SPARC cannabis dispensary posted a video on the Press Democrat website, warning parents to keep kids away from cannabis.

"We want to make sure that just like alcohol, just like medications, your cannabis products are put away where your kids can't reach them," the dispensary urged.

California Poison Control Centers and emergency rooms have seen an uptick in accidental ingestion cases, even though the state requires that legal cannabis products have tamper-proof packaging.
