Drought conditions in California continue to take a tighter grip on the state.
The weekly U.S. Drought Monitor report released Thursday morning showed increasing Exceptional Drought conditions - the highest level of drought - expanding now from San Joaquin County through the Sacramento Valley into Shasta County. Most of the rest of California is in the "Extreme" or "Severe" categories while small sections of the far north coast and the two southernmost counties are in "Moderate" drought.
In the Bay Area, counties like Napa, Sonoma, Marin, Contra Costa, Solano and Alameda are completely or partially in the "Exceptional" rank.
Gov. Gavin Newsom has declared a drought emergency for 41 of California's 58 counties. He's said a further expansion is likely.
