INDIO, Calif. (KNX) – A man was found dead in a caged golf cart that had been submerged in a canal at a Southern California golf course.

CAL FIRE reported the incident just after 3 p.m. on Monday, tweeting that the golf cart had "submerged on its side in a canal" at the Terra Lago golf course in Indio.

Ben Guitron, public information officer for the Indio Police Department, told SFGate that the victim had been an employee at the golf course,

"As he was travelling he seems to have some sort accident that led to land him in the Coachella Canal," Guitron said. "Further investigation from the coroner will determine whether the accident or the water was the cause of death."

Both the Indio Police Department and the Riverside County Coroner are investigating.

The victim’s name has not yet been revealed.
