Forward progress has been stopped and evacuation warnings lifted in a grass fire that forced many to flee their homes in Yuba County on Tuesday, according to CAL FIRE.

The Intanko Fire is burning in Wheatland, located just southwest of Beale Air Force Base. It started around 2 p.m. Tuesday and has burned 900 acres, destroying at least one home. Multiple structures were threatened.

CAL FIRE said the fire is 50% contained as of Wednesday morning.

On Tuesday, evacuation warnings were issued for Kapaka and Intanko Lanes, and all housing residents east of East Garryanna Dr. in base housing were ordered to immediately evacuate. The fire was "heading directly toward that area," a tweet from Yuba County officials warned.

Strong winds in the area hampered firefighting efforts.

A temporary evacuation center has been set up at the Wheatland Community Center, officials said.

Wheatland's population is roughly 3,800 people.
