Drought and water supply experts say Gov. Gavin Newsom’s call for Californians to voluntarily cut back on water usage by 15% is hardly enough.
Many water conservation agencies and organizations throughout the state have been saying there need to be either voluntary or even mandatory water consumption cuts of 20% to as high as 40%.
Peter Glick, with the Pacific Institute, told KNX that experts have known how dire the situation is for months now. "It’s been incredibly dry, the reservoirs are already much lower than they were at a comparable time," he said.
The Pacific Institute is a water conservation nonprofit based in Oakland.
Californians are going to be sorry they didn’t save that water this time next year, he said.
"In the last drought, I think it would have been more prudent to start raising the alarm earlier and to start telling people all the things that they can do and have done in previous droughts to save water," he said.
Glick expects Newsom to make some kind of decision on this issue soon.
