Tuesday's vote includes open primaries for governor, attorney general, secretary of state, several U.S. House seats and mayoral races – including San Jose mayor, where current Mayor Sam Liccardo cannot seek another term due to term limits.

The tally that's perhaps grabbed the most local and national headlines is the recall of San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin.

The progressive prosecutor was elected district attorney in 2019 and previously faced a recall effort that failed to reach the ballot last year. However, concerns about rising crime in San Francisco have voters weighing whether Boudin should continue in the job.

U.S. Sen. Alex Padilla, who was appointed to the position by Gov. Gavin Newsom following Kamala Harris' ascension to vice president, finds himself in the unique position of facing two votes on Tuesday: The first is against a group of candidates vying to serve out the remainder of the term he was appointed to, while the second is a larger group hoping to nab the seat's full six-year term starting in 2023.

The polls close at 8 p.m.
