Gov. Gavin Newsom on Tuesday signed a relief package aimed at providing aid to those hardest hit by the pandemic, including support to those who may have fallen through the cracks of the federal stimulus.

That includes undocumented citizens, who were not eligible to receive federal money, as long as they file tax forms and make under $75,000 per year.

"That’s, frankly, something distinctive in this country," Gov. Newsom said at a press conference. "I don’t know many other states, or any other state, that is doing what this state is doing. And for that, we are not ashamed. We are proud."

In all, some 5.7 million Californians will receive stimulus payments, including those who claim the state’s earned income tax credit or make $30,000 or less per year.

The package also provides grants of up to $25,000 for small businesses.

"We recognize the stress, the strain that so many small businesses have been under, and we recognize as well our responsibility to do more and do better to help support these small businesses through this very difficult and trying time," the governor said.
