A magnitude 4.7 earthquake was reported Monday afternoon in the area of Big Sur, straddling the line between Monterey and San Luis Obispo counties.

The quake was registered at 4:42 p.m. near Ragged Point on Highway 1, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. A 3.6 quake was reported seven minutes later in the same spot.

Shaking could be felt as far north as the southern shore of the San Francisco Bay, and as far south as the City of San Luis Obispo proper.

It was the largest earthquake recorded in California since July 17—a magnitude 5.7 which struck the waters off Cape Mendocino in Northern California’s Humboldt County.
