Erin Wilson, Eva's owner, confirmed the news to The Sacramento Bee.
Eva – a two-year-old Belgian Malinois – "started getting wobbly and having seizures over the weekend at their home in Trinity County," Wilson told the paper. After initially going to a veterinarian in Redding, Calif., Eva was rushed to the animal hospital at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine.
She was put on a ventilator on Wednesday morning and "never woke up."
Eva defended her owner from the mountain lion as the two were walking near a picnic area along State Route 299 on May 16, according to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
The dog was slightly ahead of Wilson when the animal attacked from the side, eventually biting the dog's head and not letting go. After flagging a passing motorist to help, Wilson ended up freeing Eva from the animal's bite by hitting it repeatedly with a PVC pipe.
Wilson, 24, sustained bite wounds, scratches, bruises and abrasions.
At the time of the incident, Eva's wounds made it impossible to know if she would survive. She passed away less than a month after the attack. It wasn't immediately clear if state wildlife officials had caught the cougar yet, which they said was the plan following the attack.
