
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – A hiker has died in Northern California after being swept into the ocean by a wave.

On Sunday at around 2:30 p.m., the Shelter Cove Ocean Rescue Team rescued two hikers from the water at Black Sands Beach in Humboldt County.
According to officials, the second hiker had ventured into the water to save the first, but was also swept out into the ocean due to a strong current and powerful waves, Redheaded Blackbelt reported. Both victims were rescued, however, one of the hikers was pronounced dead at the scene.
In a statement posted to Facebook, the Shelter Cove Ocean Rescue Team wrote that their crew was "pushed to the limits" while conducting the rescue operation on a boat and jetski amid 15 to 20 foot waves.
The victim who survived was transported by helicopter to a local hospital. Their current condition is unknown.
