Heading to Lake Tahoe? You won't be able to use Highway 50.
A hard closure started at 4 p.m. on Friday between Sly Park Rd. and Twin Bridges due to the Caldor Fire, Caltrans District 3 announced in a tweet.
Officials preemptively closed the area as high winds are expected to pick up on Saturday, creating red flag conditions in a very active fire scene CAL FIRE PIO Keith Wade told KCBS Radio.
Even though fire spread was moderate on Friday, officials are anticipating an increased spread over the weekend.
The red flag warning is expected to last until Saturday evening. Officials will make decisions hour to hour based on weather conditions, fire progression and containment lines.
Approximately 30,000 residents are under mandatory evacuation orders from Twin Bridges to Placer and Amador County lines and Silver Fork Rd.
Evacuation warnings are out for Amador County.
With the closure, detour routes include I-80 to Truckee, Highway 89 or Highway 88.
The Caldor Fire is currently at 82,000 acres with 0% containment.
