Races and outdoor public sporting events are coming back to California.

Starting Saturday, organizers are again allowed to hold marathons, triathlons and family fun runs, if COVID-19 safety measures are followed.

Runners will have to pre-register and follow the California Department of Public Health’s latest mask guidelines, but they’ll be able to race again soon.

“It’s so exciting because racing is such a huge part of running. It gives you a goal – these races,” said Matthew Jeung, the president of the San Francisco Roadrunners Club, the largest running club in the city. “And also, during these races, the community comes out. We cheer, we support each other.”

His club is doing runs together now, but at a distance, and with many participants wearing masks.

He said that if the Santa Rosa, San Francisco or Sacramento marathons this fall and winter sound good to people, now is when they need to start training.

“It takes time,” Jeung told KCBS Radio. “It’s a journey, running a first marathon or even half-marathon, or even 5K, because people have been sheltered in place the whole year, so it’s just getting back on your feet.”

Other rules include no indoor expos, no alcohol sales and no sharing water bottles.
