While California has allowed some high school sports to resume under new health and safety rules, basketball, volleyball and other indoor youth sports are still sitting on the sidelines. Parents are suing the state to try and change that.
Like so many of her peers, Stella Buch, a freshman at Menlo School in Atherton, is sick and tired of sitting in front of a screen and is ready to go play some volleyball.
"Everyone's going through this difficult time right now, and I think all kids deserve to be able to have their sports to help keep them mentally healthy," she told KCBS Radio.
The state has allowed outdoor high school sports to resume under certain conditions amid the coronavirus pandemic, but indoor sports like volleyball and basketball are still banned.
That's why Stella's Mom, Heather Rosenberg Buch, decided to file a lawsuit against the state.
"I was thrilled that football and water polo got the green light last Friday," she said. "We just don't think the new rules go far enough, and the 47,000 girls in the state who play high school volleyball are kind of being left out."
She said 85,000 volleyball team games have already been played safely with masks across the U.S.
Under new state guidelines, indoor youth sports are allowed to resume only if a county enters the yellow or least restrictive tier.
