Booking campsites at California state parks just got a lot easier thanks to a new partnership.

Reservations for state park campsites are available by the date six month ahead, but the most popular sites go quickly. Sometimes they’re booked full less than 15 minutes after becoming available.

“For Memorial Day weekend and 4th of July, almost all 15,000 are already reserved,” said KCBS Radio and San Francisco Chronicle Outdoors Editor Tom Stienstra.

He said that’s why the California State Parks and San Francisco-based company Hipcamp have teamed up to provide campers with real-time information for reservation cancellations.

“So, you can go to this interactive map, see the parks available that have camps and how many are available right now,” Stienstra told KCBS Radio.

Stienstra said he expects many campers to use the service given the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the fact that more people are looking to get outdoors now that they’re vaccinated.

“A lot of people feel that a tent or RV is the safest place you can be in the outdoors,” he said.

The new service launched this week.
