A California QAnon follower has been indicted by a federal grand jury for killing his two children with a spearfishing gun in Mexico.

Matthew Taylor Coleman, a 40-year-old surf instructor from Santa Barbara, was charged with two counts of foreign first-degree murder on Wednesday, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of California said in a statement.

A criminal complaint filed on Aug. 11 accused Coleman of killing his 10-month-old daughter and two-year-old son on Aug. 9 by “shooting a spearfishing gun into their chests.” The father reportedly told investigators that his belief in right-wing political conspiracy theories inspired him to kill his children.

“Coleman stated that he believed his children were going to grow into monsters so he killed them,” FBI special agent Jennifer Bannon wrote in the affidavit filed with the U.S. District Court in Los Angeles.

Wounds indicated that the boy was stabbed 17 times while the girl was stabbed 11 times.

Coleman could face the death penalty, however, an attorney general will decide whether to seek that course of action at a later date.
