UC Berkeley Central Sierra Snow Lab Lead Scientist Andrew Schwartz told KCBS Radio more than 650 inches of snow has already fallen. It's possible that California will pass the 1983 record for the second snowiest winter ever recorded today.
"If we do get more rain than we're expecting, then it might be out a week, but we're expecting to see multiple other storms, which means we'll be taking over that number two spot sooner or later," he said.
The Sierra may even hit the all-time snowiest winter mark, which was set in 1952 when the region saw 812 inches, but there's also another record for the highest snow water equivalent — a measurement that shot up with these warmer atmospheric river storms.
"Definitely possible that it's one of the top years, it's not the top year," Schwartz said.
