A small recreational aircraft landed in the southbound lanes of the 5 freeway in Del Mar, near San Diego on Tuesday afternoon, California High Patrol has confirmed.

The plane, a single-engine Piper PA-32, landed on a strip of the freeway near Via de la Valle shortly after 12 p.m. It came to a stop against the center freeway divider, a CHP officer said.

The plane reportedly may have hit several vehicles after landing. Emergency crews on site confirmed that two individuals inside the plane did not appear to be injured. First responders have not confirmed whether any motorists were injured.

Caltrans San Diego has advised motorists to avoid the area. All southbound lanes and the northbound HOV and #1 lanes have been closed. Traffic is being diverted off Lomas Santa Fe Drive.

San Diego police are looking into why the plane needed to make an emergency landing. The Federal Aviation Administration is also investigating the incident.
