Governor Gavin Newsom is hitting the road to sell his ambitious plan to get more Californians vaccinated through a lottery-style giveaway of millions of dollars.

A new study shows the plan might just work.

A recent UCLA study looked at the willingness of people to get vaccinated against COVID-19 if offered increasing sums of money.

There are few truly bipartisan issues these days, but Lynn Vavreck, professor of American politics and public policy at UCLA, said this might be one of them.

"Across all kinds of demographic groups, and there might be very small changes – Democrats, Republicans, men and women – but everybody is moved toward vaccination by these changes that effect their material condition," she told KCBS Radio.

Of course, the response wasn't unanimous. Vavreck, a guest on KCBS Radio's "The State of California," said that for some, the payment had a negative impact.

"They think, 'gosh if they have to pay people, what does that say about this'?" she noted. "And they're already skeptical. But on balance, we saw a net move toward vaccination."

Aside from the cash payments, Vavreck said that simply telling people they would no longer need to wear a mask by getting vaccinated made them more likely to get the shot.
