Temperatures are expected to reach over 100 degrees in certain parts of the Bay Area starting Thursday and lasting through the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

Even though much of August has been temperate throughout the region due to thick coastal fog, high pressure is building, causing temperatures to heat back up by an average of between 5 and 15 degrees in the Bay Area.

"This is the first major heat event that we have seen this summer," said Gerry Diaz, meteorologist with the NWS Bay Area office, told the San Francisco Chronicle. "This is in contrast to the cool weather that we've had since late May, due to the persistent marine layer."

Temperatures could reach up to 105 Friday or Saturday in the San Ygnacio Valley, Livermore and Brentwood areas. The interior valleys of the north and south bay could hit 100. Coastal areas will be in the 60s and 70s, with it reaching the 80s in cities surrounding the bay.

Wind gusts are expected to reach 15 to 25 mph in the mountain ridges but it will be a cool, humid wind, with there is no elevated fire danger in the bulletin. There will be no significant overnight cooling in the mountain areas, with temperatures expected to remain in the 70s. Inland valleys should cool down to the 60s.

The heat spell is expected to break early next week.
