Starting Wednesday, as a high-pressure system moves into the area, parts of the region will see temperatures around 15 to 25 degrees higher than normal, according to the National Weather Service Bay Area office.

"Thursday will be the peak event," said Brooke Bingaman, an NWS meteorologist. "That is where we are expecting our hottest temperatures."

The East Bay is likely to be hit the hardest, with cities like Livermore and Concord expecting temperatures from the low to mid-90s, she said.

While it's not uncommon for the area to see this kind of heatwave, the last time temperatures were this high during this time of year was in 1989.

"And so what we're unsure of is how many records will actually be broken this week because we already had a strong event back in 1989," said Bingaman. "So we'll be will at least be close to breaking some of those records."

If it hadn't been for that heat event in 1989, it's likely several records would have been broken this week, she added.

The heatwave will begin to dissipate on Friday, and the 14-day forecast expects that a cooler system will move into the Bay Area soon after.
