Rain returns, leaves fire zones susceptible to debris flows

Wet weather is finally forecast in the Bay Area.

But that change could be a dangerous one in the region’s many fire burn zones. Those who live at higher elevations never like to see forecasts of high winds, but Friday’s could be especially problematic.

"We do have weakened trees and some of those burn scars, so there is a possibility there we might see some trees fall over, that sort of thing," said Jerry Diaz, meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

There is also the threat of mudslides in burn areas, but what we shouldn’t have to worry about is more fire danger.

"It’s one of those situations where we expect breezy conditions for the most part, but we’re not expecting dry conditions with this," Diaz said.

In Santa Cruz County, officials are so concerned about the possibility of debris flows in fire zones like the burn scar of the CZU Lightning Complex they’ve introduced a new system for residents to know just how dangerous it could be on their property.

"Those volumes run downhill, they collect in channels, they accelerate, they pick up eventually large trees and boulders and they move extremely fast," said Jason Hoppin, Santa Cruz County Communications Manager.

County officials are now promoting what they’re calling "Know Your Zone," urging residents to prepare. Resources include an analysis of possible at-risk areas.

"The people that live down below the fire zone that actually did not see the fire come in to their property do remain at risk," Hoppin explained.

Temperatures are expected to drop Friday, with scattered showers expected to start in the afternoon. Chances for more rain continue throughout the weekend.

In the South Bay, about a 0.5" of rain is expected.
