Clubhouse, the live audio chat app known for its exclusivity and invite-only status, is opening to everyone, the company announced on Wednesday.
The app had previously employed a waitlist system that required an existing user to invite new users to the platform. Clubhouse's new app for both iOS and Android arrives with the announcement, which came in a blog post.
"If you have a club, you can post your link far and wide," Clubhouse founders Paul Davison and Rohan Seth wrote in the post. "If you are a creator with an audience, you can bring them all on. If you’re hosting a public event, anyone can attend. You can bring close friends, classmates, family members, coworkers, and anyone else you like."
The app's "invite system has been an important part of our early history," they said.
New updates to the iOS and Android apps are expected every 1-2 weeks.
Clubhouse was first launched in April 2020 on iOS, only adding an Android app for the first time earlier this year.
It's estimated the app has been installed 30 million times globally, according to Variety, though the startup has yet to release download figures. The average Clubhouse user reportedly spends more than 60 minutes per day on the platform.
"Everyone in the world should have access to meaningful conversations," the blog post added. "The best rooms on Clubhouse are the ones where you meet people from far outside your social circle, with very different views and lived experiences, who change your perspective on the world."
