Facebook and Instagram appear to be experiencing a widespread outage on Thursday afternoon.
Both social media sites appeared to go down around 2:20 p.m. PST, with users across the country having issues refreshing the sites. Both displayed error messages.
The desktop version of Facebook.com returns a message that reads simply: "Sorry, something went wrong. We're working on getting this fixed as soon as we can."
Instagram, which is owned by Facebook, also displayed an error message and appears to be experiencing an issue refreshing users' feeds as well. People flocked to Twitter to make sure they weren't the only ones having problems.

WhatsApp, which is also owned by Facebook, did not appear to experience any problems.
Within about half an hour, the sites began loading again for most users although issues persist. It is not clear what caused the outage.
