Ekho Moskvy's editor confirmed the move to the news agency on Tuesday.
The station, listed as of the Russia's "few remaining liberal media," had reportedly been targeted along with the TV Rain online news channel by the Russian prosecutor general's office.
The station's "targeted and systematic posting…of information calling for extremist activities, violence and deliberately false information about the actions of Russian forces as part of a special operation" in Ukraine led to its ouster, according to the prosecutor's office.
Russian officials don't allow use of terms like "war" and "invasion" in contending their forces have been sent into Ukraine to protect citizens subjected to genocide and demilitarize the region, all claims denounced and discredited by Ukraine itself and the West.
The station's website – which was down for a short period of time but then came back online – said its executives would fight the "baseless and offensive" accusations in court, Reuters said.
