A pair of pandas will soon be making a journey from China to the San Diego Zoo. When they arrive, they’ll be the first panda pair to enter the U.S. in 21 years.

These distinctive black-and-white bears are protected in China, where they live in bamboo forests. In addition to their unique appearance, they are some of the most vocal bears and they have a slow reproductive rate – just about 1,800 live in their native habitats today.

The San Diego Zoo has been providing care to pandas since 1987. In fact, it was the first zoo in the U.S. to have a cooperative panda conservation program. This year marks its 30th anniversary of the conservation partnership between San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance and China Wildlife Conservation Association.
