Las Vegas, NV (KXNT) - North Las Vegas Police confirmed Thursday night that one of their officers has died following a shooting earlier in the day.

According to NLVPD, the incident took place on Tuesday afternoon in the 4700 block of High Creek, near Lone Mountain and Camino al Norte.

Police originally responded to reports of an individual who was armed with a handgun and was throwing rocks at vehicles.

The officer, identified Wednesday as 46-year-old Jason Roscow, located the suspect and delivered commands to stop what he was doing. The suspect then approached Roscow and gunfire was exchanged.

Officials report Roscow was shot multiple times and taken to UMC where, despite life saving efforts, he passed away.

“It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the passing of one of North Las Vegas’ finest,” said NLVPD Chief Jacqueline Gravatt. “Police officers choose this line of work because they want to protect and serve the community, knowing the risks and challenges that come with the badge. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the officer’s family, friends and his brotherhood in blue.”

The suspect was identified on Wednesday afternoon as 25-year-old Alexander Mathis.
