PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - This year is now a record-breaker for the number of firearms caught by TSA agents at Pittsburgh International.
The 35th gun of 2019 was stopped by Transportation Security Administrations officers on Monday when a man from Marion County, West Virginia was caught trying to get a 9 mm handgun loaded with seven bullets, including one in the chamber, through security.
The gun was spotted by a TSA officer in the man's carry-on as it went through the X-ray machine at a checkpoint.
Allegheny County Police responded, confiscated the firearm and took the man in for questioning.
The TSA says last year 4,239 firearms were discovered in carry-on bags across the country, that's about 11.6 guns a day.
Already crowded check points during the holiday come to a standstill when a gun is discovered, extending the wait times for people trying to get a on a flight.
TSA agents stopped 34 guns in 2018 and 32 in 2017.
