PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Michael Rosfeld’s attorney Pat Thomassey pushed for Judge Alexander Bicket to lift the gag order in the murder trial of Michael Rosfeld for the Rosfeld family.
Thomassey tells KDKA Radio “Rosfeld’s family is very upset. Everyday there’s things in the paper about how this wasn’t justified, how it was a cold-blooded killing and it’s anything but that . . . and I just got tired of it and it just wasn’t fair and I think the judge by lifting it agreed with me.”
Attorney Lee Merritt, who represents the Rose family in their civil case, has been speaking with reporters for the past few days and Thomassey says he wanted the same opportunity.
Thomassey says he thinks the reporting of the case has been fair thus far but wanted an opportunity to speak out like the Rose family attorney has been doing.
Thomassey considers the social impact a case like Rosfeld’s has and doesn’t want to see anyone get hurt but he believes people are ignoring the facts of the case.
“That’s what really bothers and I’ve said this and I’ll say this if Mike Rosfeld is a black police officer, I don’t know that he’s charged in this case,” said Thomassey.
Thomassey says he believes Rosfeld did “alright” on the stand and that he wanted him to speak to the jury.
Thomassey also says his massage to the jury during closing arguments will be simple, that then officer Rosfeld was doing his job.
“If young people today (are) stopped by a police man, just do what you’re told to do and nothing’s going to happen, that’s all,” said Thomassey. “If they don’t jump out of the car and everybody gets arrested then you handle it from there.”
Thomassey says neither he nor anyone from his office has received any threats during the trial.
