PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - For years news anchor Sonni Abatta got people ready for their day on the KDKA-TV morning news before deciding to move to Florida where she continued on TV until a few years ago when she decided to focus more on her family and writing.
Since leaving TV, Abatta has found success writing about her experiences as a mother and a couple of her pieces have caught the attention of national media.
While Florida may be her current place of residence, she says Pittsburgh will always be home.
She joined Larry and John on KDKA Radio during her annual “Pittsburgh Pilgrimage” to talk about her writing and shared some advice that she uses to keep a positive attitude, even when the children are driving her crazy.
A lot of the experiences that Abatta has with motherhood are not unique but she believes it makes it easier when mothers can share them.
“It’s just so much more fun to go through all of these crazy experiences with like that feeling that you’re not alone so I hope that my writing accomplished that because I know I’ve been in need of that reassurance before that I’m not the only one going through whatever crazy phase it is,” said Abatta.
Abatta, who is the proud mother of a 6-year-old son, a 4-year-old daughter and a 2-year-old daughter says she recently has changed her attitude toward the things that she “has to do” to things that she gets to do.
“Even though the tasks remain tedious and kind of like the daily grind of motherhood, it does really change your perspective,” said Abatta. “I get to spend time with the kids. I mean yes, they are a lot sometimes and yes it’s difficult but I get to do this and as any parent knows that window of time when they’re young and in awe of everything in the world is so short and I think I’m starting to realize that with my oldest, so I’m trying to flip my ‘have to’s’ to ‘get to’s’.”
While a majority of the response she gets on her pieces is from mothers she says she does get a lot of feedback from fathers.
While she admits she misses parts of being on TV and the work that comes with it, she doesn’t miss “all of the juggling that it took to get to the job every day.”
