PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Pittsburgh City Council wants more time to consider the impact of restricting the use of facial recognition and predictive policing technology.
The concern is racial bias in using facial recognition and other technology to solve crimes.
But Councilman Rick Burgess wonders about the impact in a time when people are calling for cutting funding to police.
"And I am also hesitant if we are going to reduce the size of the force but also reduce the amount of tools that they have and the technology that they have," said Burgess.
Pittsburgh does not own facial recognition technology, but has access to it through a state data bank.
"We all know and we've heard and we've seen technology that does not work and it affects people," said O'Connor. Including possible racial bias.
Council has voted to delay a preliminary vote until next week to give members and public safety officials more time to consider the impact.
