HARRISBURG Pa. (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) – Pennsylvania is now reporting over 70,000 cases of COVID-19 in the commonwealth.
The PA Department of Health confirmed 625 new coronavirus cases in the state to bring the total to 70,042
The 625 new cases is 155 less compared to Wednesday's total.
An additional 108 new deaths have also been reported across the state, five less compared to Wednesday
That brings the total to 5,373 people that have died from coronavirus in Pennsylvania.
Of those deaths, 3,501 have occurred in patients of long-term or nursing home facilities.
Most of the commonwealth's fatalities have occurred in those 65 and older.
357,804 patients have tested negative in PA.
The age range of COVID-19 cases:
- Nearly 1% are ages 0-4;
- Nearly 1% are ages 5-12;
- Nearly 2% are ages 13-18;
- 6% are ages 19-24;
- Nearly 37% are ages 25-49;
- 25% are ages 50-64; and
- 28% are ages 65 or older.
Most of the commonwealth's fatalities have occurred in those 65 and older.
15,158 residents of nursing or personal care homes have tested positive for COVID-19 with 2,563 cases in employees for a total of 17,721 at 600 facilities in 44 PA counties.
About 5,279 cases are in health care workers.
There is a 61% recovery rate within the state of Pennsylvania and the Department describes a recovered case as If a case has not been reported as a death, and it is more than 30 days past the date of their first positive test (or onset of symptoms) then an individual is considered recovered.
"As Pennsylvania continues to move forward in the process to reopen, we need to remember that the threat from COVID-19 has not gone away," Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine said. "As counties move into the yellow and green phases, we must take personal responsibility to protect others. Wearing a mask, continuing to maintain social distancing, and washing your hands frequently are all steps we can take to help protect others, including our most vulnerable Pennsylvanians, our essential workers and our healthcare system."
18 counties in PA will move into the green phase of the state's mitigation plan this Friday with all remaining red counties scheduled to move into the yellow phase by June 5.
