COVID-19 Forces G7 To Cancel Pittsburgh Meeting

Pittsburgh

WASHINGTON (Newsradio 1020 KDKA/AP) - The annual G7 Conference that was scheduled to take place later this month in Pittsburgh have been cancelled.

The event will now be held by video conference.

"Out of an abundance of caution, the United States has decided to host the upcoming G7 ministerial virtually by video teleconference instead of gathering in Pittsburgh, March 24-25," State Department spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus said in a statement. "We thank the city of Pittsburgh for its willingness to host this year's G7 ministerial and for the support and assistance planning this year's event. We look forward to hold future events there."

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was set to host the meeting at the Omni William Penn Hotel downtown.

Foreign affairs ministers from the U.S. United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy Japan and Canada were scheduled to meet ahead of this year's G7 summit being held by President Trump at Camp David in June.

The worldwide epidemic also led more universities to move their classes online, the pope's weekly catechism lesson to be live-streamed and governments to ban public gatherings.
